My experience was eye opening, enlightening and empowering. I changed in myself and I couldn’t be more thankful for the experience of a lifetime. Ghanaian women are the strongest women I have ever had the pleasure to care for and I learnt a great deal about the capabilities of the human body. The staff were very happy for us to become involved with the care of female patients. For me, the most unique part of the experience was the chance to deliver a baby on my birthday; it means I shall never forget my 22nd Birthday in Ghana.
My advice for future students would be to grab every opportunity
My advice for future students would be to ask lots of questions, grab hold of every opportunity as it is a very different experience to placements within the UK and write a diary entry each day to ensure you don’t forget what happened!
I chose Work the World because of the fantastic reviews from previous students at my university, for my first time travelling. The support they gave me was perfect for organising and planning and answering any questions I had.
On arrival, the hospital orientation ensured we were ready for the hospital, meeting the staff we would be working with when we were on our placements. Whereas the city orientation ensured we knew about bargaining with taxi drivers, where to go in the city and most important of all, how to get to the beach! Once placements had started, we would all meet up at Vienna beach in the afternoons to de-brief about the day’s events and reflect and learn from what we had seen.
Well worth the experience!
