I was a little bit apprehensive initially about travelling with a company such as Work the World as it would limit my independence, but in fact it served to enhance my experience.

The approach to delivering healthcare in a resource-limited setting was something I took back into my training in Canada.

A month before we were meant to leave our independently organised elective was cancelled. We called Work the World and they arranged electives in our chosen fields around our flight dates.

If I were to use one word to sum up my time in Sri Lanka it would be ‘amazing’. It is an experience full of fabulous memories which will stay with me forever.

I rotated around the general medical, paediatric and accident & emergency departments. This gave me the opportunity to see diseases that you seldom see, or have only ever heard about.
